Hi all.

There was a thread on here last year about someone running their engine whilst connected to shoreline.

 

This was supposed to have damaged their inverter .

 

I have tried searching but can't find the thread any links to it anybody ?

I don't see how it could damage the combi.

I do hope your right. It's the charging side that acting a little strange.

 

Come back to boat after a week, combi left on charger only. No lights on panel at all .

 

Switch it off and back on again, it starts to charge in bulk as normal then drops to absorption and after 10 mins, clunk from the combi as a contractor drops out and no display again??. Batteries are 8 months old.

 

The only thing I did recently after an oil change, was to run the engine whilst the shoreline was connected.?

Taupe Yohani Marc Fisher Womens LTD Since its often advantageous running the engine so the alternator(s) can offset the inverters (Combi or stand-alone) current draw from the batteries, I can see no reason why this could possibly be true. I'm sure the real fault cause was something else.

 

Likewise running engine whilst Combi (in charger mode) is connected to shore power will do no harm although maybe pointless.

Yes, can't see how that could have damaged it. Perhaps it is an issue with the shore power? Is it from mains or a generator? Can you try feeding the Victron from a different mains supply?

 

Ed: perhaps over-voltage shutoff (ie mains voltage too high) -whilst the Combi is loading the mains, it is keeping the voltage below the spec limit of 265(?) and when it goes to float, mains demand disappears, voltage rises and Combi shuts off. Just a thought. Richard and I are familiar with a boatyard where the shore power voltage is very high, so it can happen.

Is it the remote panel that not showing lights? The sequence you describe is normal for fully charged batteries. Edited by Robbo

No Robbo it's not normal. The lights, even on the remote panel should show something. In the circumstances described I would expect the float light to be illuminated.

The charging sequence is normal, the lack of lights isn't.

OP, check that the cable between the inverter and the remote control panel (assuming you have one) is seated firmly in both connections (inverter and panel)

Thanks for all the replies .

 

Left the boat last weekend with remote panel in off position and no lights lit.

 

Returned to it today, switched remote panel to charge only, mains light lit up, bulk light lit up and it dropped down to absorbstion a while later.

 

We were there about 3 hours and all worked ok?.....

 

Maybe it was the incoming supply it didn't like...?????
